They said “You can’t hum a video game”. Then Mario came along.

We all love video game music. As Tatsudoshi said in 8-bit Medley to Digital Orchestrated Overtures, graphics might receive most of the attention, but music is what makes the game.

On April 15th, the Bryan Symphony Orchestra will be performing the soundtrack to Iron Grip: The Oppression at Tennessee Tech University. Iron Grip: The Oppression is an Isotx mod, and having done quite a lot of work on Iron Grip I’m pretty excited. I can’t make it myself, sadly, but I’m looking forward to hearing the recording.

Of course, this isn’t the first time a full orchestra has taken to playing music from video games. The popular Video Games Live concert is, by all accounts, a pretty astounding show.

Then, of course there’s the remixes. I have the Final Fantasy 7: Voices of the Lifestream remix on pretty much solidly whilst at work.

Monique, at Girls Don’t Game, highlighted some of her favorite game music semi-recently. Some great choices here, and some things missing. Meanwhile, The Artful Gamer made a post not so long ago about the subtlety involved in the soundtrack for the Monkey Island games.

Meanwhile, VGMusic made a fantastic post about the history of video game music, and in particular the influence of Japanese soundtracks. Gamespot has a similar history, which is a bit more comprehensive.

Finally, just to round things off, Mideast Crisis 2, another Isotx game, released two tracks from its up-and-coming mod. You can listen to them both here.

If you’re interested in the theoretical side video game music — someone else is, I hope! — I wrote up a mini-analysis comparing some Koji Kondo compositions. It’s linked by my name.

Each article I have read is very well written and to the point. I would also like to state, not only are the articles well written, but the lay-out of your site is excellent. I was able to navigate from article to article and find what I was looking for with ease. Keep up the excellent work you are doing, and I will return many times in the future.
