Over at Elder Game, Eric responded to my post on dealing with Crunch Time. He asks, how is crunch time avoidable? He points out that negotiating with the upper-management is frequently a losing battle, particularly in larger companies like EA. Take a look at his post, as it discusses why crunch time ‘works’, at least for some types of games.
On a slightly different note, The Brainy Gamer pointed me towards a lovely Guardian editorial on the position of games as ‘culture’. Time and time again, gamers have to defend their hobby from the (increasingly small) numbers of people who still consider it a vacuous kids occupation of no real merit. Whilst Tetris may not be an illustration of Camus’ Myth of Sisyphus there’s no denying that games can - and sometimes have - reached the emotional and philosophical depths of other media. No, they are not the same as books, anymore than books are the same as film. But games do provide us with some very interesting tools to explore all those themes of love, war, betrayal, society, human nature, religion, etc. Don’t just read the article, but the comments as well - it isn’t ‘just about story’. Games are new.
Also, for the coders out there, Lost Garden has provided a full suit of graphics and design documentation for a fun looking game called Play with your Peas. If you want to test out your ability to code a decent casual game, now you can. So get to it!
