Apologies for the lack of updates lately. After our first release we did spend a good deal of time working on the UN, but finals and vacations happened so much of team ended up taking an extended break. A couple members have moved onto retail games as well, with HKH now working on Bioshock 2 and Muk giving his aural magic to Fairytale Fights. Don't worry, though - the rest of the us are hard at work on the next release of MEC2.

Release 1

The first release of MEC2 was a big success, getting much more attention than we expected and overall a very positive reception. ModDB did up a very detailed article on MEC2, including some great video clips. Gamespot also gave us a nice Indie Spotlight article.

Things didn't go 100% smoothly though (bugs), but we've already fixed much of the bugs/errors for future versions. Until then there is a post detailing some temporary solutions.

What will be in Release 2

Here is a short list of some of the things we're working on for "Release 2" of MEC2;

  • The UN Peacekeepers faction
  • New IDF/GOI objects
  • New maps
  • Bug fixes
  • Balancing
  • Working EVA voices
  • Ammo crates
  • Expansion points
  • Buyable superweapon upgrades

Commanche Down

The next release of Mideast Crisis 2 will include several new maps, one of which we're unveiling here exclusively. "Commanche Down" is a 2-player map created by Bhones. A while back we recreated the C&C Generals shellmap for promotional screenshots. We  ended up liking it so much that we expanded it into a full, playable map.

Unlike our other 2-player map, "Small Town Israel," this one is defensive focused, with most of the fuel and occupation points located near the starting points. There still are expansion points, but they are in the center of the map and are protected by hostile American forces. Clear them out and you also get access to a quicker route to the enemy base.

Two Party System

This map also showcases some new map objects for Guardians of Islam-based maps. While our Israeli maps tend to be covered with nationalistic pride, our GOI maps feature political ads and banners based on the GOI Presidential campaign. The two political parties also will be extended to gameplay, as subfactions you can join (each unlocking different bonuses). As a benefit, some of your base buildings will also end up decorated with your party's banners as well.

Eye-Candy

Last but not least, here's some screenshots from this news update.

Out of curiosity what's with the green coloured directional light in the screens (I think some earlier maps have that too).

Always knew the wait would be well worth it. Very very interesting news announcement and he idea of having a 2 party system in GOI looks quite promising indeed. Hope the team isn't going to give "sub-factions" to each faction though (like Zero Hour did) since its going to take the factional diversity away and more importantly be a balancing nightmare.

More subtle specializations are definitely the way to go in my opinion ---> although I'd be happy just to see the GOI getting it, it makes it more unique

Great update after a longtime. Two party system is quite interesting. Is this something similar to the Tau tech tree in DOW? Smurf can you elaborate on new GOI/IDF objects? Wink

Out of curiosity what's with the green coloured directional light in the screens (I think some earlier maps have that too).

We've done an absurd amount of map lighting tests...and early maps we tried to mimic lighting/mood from some scenes in 'Children of Men' that had a green tint. I ended up liking the green to contrast the heavy reds in this map.

------

On the GOI sub-factions,

Don't read too much into it...it'll be more like RA1/2's subfactions in which you get a unit or two unlocked. It is likely that it'll be a choice between Martyrs/Demo Trucks (Remembrance) and Jinns (Progressive)...or something similar. We planned something like this for a while, mostly to play up the voting angle...and to make it clear that by default you aren't allied with extremists.

------

On new GOI/IDF units/buildings/etc,

The GOI is by and large 'done' aside from a new base defense that'll make you guys happy. The IDF...we have a couple of units in mind, but nothing locked down yet.

Can we get the map before release 2? ...There are only a few maps in release 1, so another map would be good now.

If we could do that, or knew how..we'd have done it. Any of you guys know of other CNC3 mods that have any major main menu changes? I'd kill to be able to do something interesting with that.

Not only does that map use a ton of new assets that we couldn't just toss in a map pack easily....but it also includes 2 new postfx volume textures which we REALLY couldn't just toss in a map pack.

Wow! Nice screenshots! Smiley
I've always liked the Generals-style maps.
I like the 'political' adds too!

Are the screenshots in this posts from the map "Comanche down" ?  ..because I don't see any wrecks of a shot down Comanche helicopter. There are just a lot of UN (or American) military forces who protect ...a market place ?? Where is the Comanche on the ground?

Good catch. Smiley

We havn't made the commanche damage states yet...so no model for that is ingame. Although it won't be in the center of the marketplace there, but will be in a plaza/garden thats off to the side.
